Anne Moraa Gekonge

Anne Moraa Gekonge is a composer and musician pursuing an MSt in Music (Composition) at the University of Oxford. She is a Mastercard Foundation scholar and a member of Linacre College. She holds a first-class honours BA in Music from Brunel University London and is a recipient of the Griffin Prize for Music for best academic performance in Music and the Sheridan Instrumental Prize for best contribution to music performance.

Influenced by her global upbringing across Europe, Asia, and Africa, Anne is passionate about World Music, the avant-garde, interdisciplinary arts, and music education. She has worked as a composer for films, games, and exhibitions, including the Play Your Own Accompaniment educational game and the Myth of Man exhibition. These roles involved film scoring, composing incidental music, and curating exhibition soundscapes, developing her cinematographic approach to composition. She enjoys composing on themes of abstract geometry, sci-fi, afro-futurism, and nature.

Anne’s specialism lies in vocal arrangements, extended vocal techniques, and creative vocal processing. Her ensemble work includes teaching vocal arrangements for the Brunel Soundscapes Festival and the Kenya National Music Festival, and performing in the Addams Family Theatrical Show. She is excited to explore choral composition further by participating in the Oxford University Chorus and the Linacre College choir. In addition to singing, she is proficient in the piano and ishiriri.

Alongside her work, Anne has taken part in a range of volunteering roles. She co-founded the Dance Society at Kampala International School Uganda to promote fitness and creativity during the pandemic, volunteered at the Hillingdon DASH hub to facilitate recreational programmes, and volunteered as a music teacher at Emmanuella Mazzola Kindergarten in Nairobi. She looks forward to volunteering at the Oxide student radio station and joining the dance and football societies at Oxford.
