Demira Padayachee

Demira Padayachee is a South African health systems practitioner pursuing an MSc in Applied Digital Health at the University of Oxford. She is a Mastercard Foundation Scholar and a member of Christ Church.

She grew up in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, to parents who raised three daughters, two of whom are now qualified doctors, with the third on her way. From the age of sixteen, she spent most school holidays in her hometown’s tertiary hospital and initially set her sights on surgery. Watching skilled doctors leave medicine, or leave the country for lack of posts, convinced her that the deepest problems facing her patients were systemic rather than clinical.

Demira moved into clinical research on multinational trials, then into health technology as founder’s associate and lead content strategist at Four Minute Medicine. She now works as a Clinical Evidence Practitioner at the Knowledge Translation Unit in Cape Town, where she leads innovation projects.

Through her MSc, she aims to harness digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, to strengthen health systems and health workforce capacity across South Africa and the continent, with a particular interest in the health of women and children.

Beyond healthcare, Demira volunteers with Project Flamingo and Ladles of Love, fosters rescue pets, designs, and writes.
