Fanta Fofana
MSc in International Health and Tropical Medicine
Fanta Fofana is a Mastercard Foundation Scholar at the University of Oxford from The Gambia, pursuing an MSc in International Health and Tropical Medicine. She is a member of Brasenose College.
Fanta holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the University of The Gambia, where she graduated as the best-performing medical student in her class in 2020.
She currently works as a Medical Officer at the Clinical Services Department of the Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In this role, she contributes to clinical care, reviews and develops clinical guidelines, leads quality improvement projects, and teaches medical students.
Fanta also volunteers as Programme Team Lead at the Medical Women’s Association of The Gambia (MWAGAM), which champions the health of women and children. She has held leadership roles including National Exchange Officer for the Gambia Medical Students’ Association (GAMSA), facilitating international placements for medical students, and Vice President of the University of The Gambia Students' Union, where she represented students at the University Senate.
Her professional interests include health equity, gender advocacy, and strengthening access to primary care. At Oxford, she aims to deepen her skills in research, leadership, and public speaking to drive sustainable improvements in health services in marginalised communities.
After completing her studies, Fanta plans to establish a mobile health clinic offering subsidised care to remote areas in The Gambia, particularly for women and children with limited access to essential health services.
