Gina Priscilla Birungi

MSc in Medical Physics with Radiobiology.

Priscilla Gina Birungi is a Ugandan biomedical engineer and St Cross-AfOx Scholar at the University of Oxford, currently pursuing an MSc in Medical Physics with Radiobiology. She is a member of St Cross College.

Birungi graduated with First Class Honours in Biomedical Engineering from Ernest Cook Ultrasound Research and Education Institute, where she gained expertise in the maintenance and optimisation of diagnostic and therapeutic devices.

During her hospital internship in Uganda, she observed that diagnostic imaging procedures were often repeated due to poor image quality, primarily because full-time medical physicists were not employed to conduct regular quality assurance checks. This experience sparked her interest in medical physics and its vital role in improving diagnostic accuracy and patient safety.

At Oxford, Birungi is focusing on quality assurance, dosimetry, and image optimisation in medical imaging, with an emphasis on patient-centred care. Her long-term goal is to help build sustainable medical physics capacity in Uganda to address the rising cancer burden and improve access to safe, effective radiation-based healthcare technologies.

Outside her academic interests, she looks forward to discovering Oxford’s rich history and enjoying long walks through its cobbled streets and historic quads.
