June Muthoni Mbuthi

June Muthoni Mbuthi is a Kenyan Mastercard Foundation Scholar pursuing an MSc in Evidence-Based Social Intervention and Policy Evaluation at the University of Oxford. She is a member of St Antony’s College.

She is a researcher, social impact strategist, and the founder of Good Soil, an initiative supporting children and young people navigating compounded parental loss. Her work examines how child welfare systems can respond when the death of one parent and the subsequent incarceration of the other converge in a child’s life. She has conducted qualitative research with children and the relatives who step into parental roles thereafter, and has mapped how these challenges are experienced within families and communities.

Through Good Soil, Muthoni aims to work with justice institutions and child welfare agencies to develop trauma-responsive interventions that are coherent, testable, and scalable. Through social media, Good Soil’s public education and awareness efforts have reached more than 17,000 people.

Alongside this work, Muthoni has spent half a decade supporting mission-driven organisations through strategy, communications, and impact storytelling across Africa, the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Asia. This experience has deepened her understanding of contextual social challenges and equipped her to drive resource mobilisation in prospective donor markets. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Design from the University of Nairobi, which shaped her human-centred approach to problem-solving and her commitment to designing for needs that institutions often overlook.

Muthoni also mentors young girls and boys navigating adversity, and her long-term goal is to build scalable systems that protect children, strengthen carers, and ensure that justice extends beyond legal outcomes to the children left behind. Outside her work, she enjoys true-crime documentaries, exploring new places, and spending time with animals, and is usually the person petting the nearest cat.
