Justice Appiah Nuamah

MSc Sustainability, Enterprise and the Environment, Reuben College

Justice Appiah Nuamah, AMEI, is an early career energy scientist and engineer from Ghana pursuing an MSc in Sustainability, Enterprise and the Environment at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, University of Oxford. He is a Mastercard Foundation and Oxford-Reuben Scholar and a member of Reuben College. He is the first individual from the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) to join the University of Oxford as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar.

He holds a First Class Honours degree in Petroleum Engineering from UMaT. During his undergraduate studies, he was a Ghana National Petroleum Corporation Scholar. He also received the Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship for leading UMaT to victory in the 2021 Ghana Gas Challenge. His academic and leadership excellence earned him selection for the 2024 McCall MacBain Regional Award for Sub-Saharan Africa, and selection as one of the 180 finalists from over 8,000 applicants worldwide for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Programme at Stanford University in 2026.

Justice’s interests include combustion physics, gas flaring reduction, carbon dioxide removal, and practical pathways for advancing energy security and net-zero goals across Africa. He has worked with the Ghana National Gas Company and has also been involved in energy research at Washington University, focusing on industrial decarbonisation. As a COP30 Simulation Fellow, he published a framework for deploying bioenergy with carbon capture and storage in Ghana.

Beyond technical research, Justice has served on the Editorial and Technical Committee for the Society of Petroleum Engineers Ghana Section. Previously, he also evaluated candidates for the U.S. Department of State-funded Mandela Washington Fellowship and Community Solutions Programme.

At Oxford, Justice aims to apply algorithmic modelling to reduce gas flaring, redirect capital, and shape energy transitions around Africa’s development priorities.
