Malaz Emmad Yousif Elryah

MSc in Pharmacology

Malaz Emmad Yousif Elryah is a Sudanese pharmacist and Mastercard Foundation Scholar at the University of Oxford pursuing an MSc in Pharmacology. She is a member of Balliol College. Her academic and professional journey is rooted in her commitment to community service, education, and research.

Malaz graduated with first-class honours from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Khartoum, ranking among the top 10% of her cohort. She has worked as a teaching assistant at the National University—Sudan, where she co-supervised undergraduate research projects and mentored students. She has also volunteered as a research assistant with the ROITA research initiative.

Before joining Oxford, Malaz served as a community pharmacist in Sudan, supporting her community amid ongoing conflict. This experience deepened her awareness of the research and treatment gaps in mental health care and inspired her to pursue pharmacological research focused on psychiatric conditions. Her leadership style is rooted in empathy, collaboration, and compassion.

At Oxford, Malaz aims to build her expertise in drug discovery and development, with a focus on treatments for psychiatric illnesses. After her studies, she plans to return to Sudan to support young researchers and foster academic collaboration between Oxford and Sudanese institutions. Her long-term goal is to contribute to more accessible and effective mental health care across Africa.
