Nseobong Charles Akpabio

Nseobong Charles Akpabio is a medical doctor from Nigeria and a Mastercard Foundation Scholar pursuing an MSc in Integrated Immunology at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, University of Oxford. He is a member of Somerville College.

He is passionate about advancing precision cardiovascular medicine by investigating the immune-mediated mechanisms underlying cardiovascular disease. Before joining Oxford, he worked as a physician at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, and at Limi Hospital, and also worked as a physician with the Federal Road Safety Corps in Nigeria. Across these roles, he delivered supervised inpatient, outpatient, and emergency care in high-volume clinical settings, gaining experience in cardiometabolic disease, rheumatological disorders, and acute medical presentations. He also gained frontline experience in the emergency assessment, stabilisation, and transfer of trauma and critically ill patients.

He earned his medical degree from the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. During this period, he served as first author, under the supervision of a Fellow of Harvard Medical School’s Program in Global Surgery and Social Change, on a study evaluating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on surgical training and surgical care delivery across Africa. He also volunteered on a nationally implemented, internationally funded research programme that strengthened maternal and perinatal surveillance and supported evidence-based improvements in maternal and child healthcare across Nigeria.

At Oxford, Nseobong aims to deepen understanding of the immune mechanisms contributing to cardiovascular disease by integrating insights from immunology, imaging, epidemiology, and cardiovascular medicine. Beyond medicine, he is passionate about advancing educational equity and has worked to advance opportunities for African students through GetIn Education Consulting, a social enterprise dedicated to democratising access to international educational opportunities.
