Professor Ahmed Mudawi Musa Mohamed

Ahmed Mudawi Musa Mohamed is a physician and a professor of immunology. He specializes in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine. Professor Mohamed is currently an AfOx Visiting Fellow at the Infectious Diseases Data Observatory, University of Oxford, as part of the Africa Oxford Visiting Fellowship Programme.

Professor Musa has extensive experience in vaccine development and new treatment modalities for visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL). He started his career as a teaching assistant at the Institute of Endemic Diseases (IEND), University of Khartoum in July 2000, and over time rose to become a full professor in 2014. He currently provides specialist consultations for the diagnosis and management of various infectious diseases in Sudan. Professor Musa has supervised numerous MSc and PhD students in immunology of infectious diseases, mainly leishmaniasis and tuberculosis, viral diseases, and schistosomiasis. He has established excellent facilities at the IEND and the endemic areas of VL for treatment, training, and research, particularly clinical trials for the development of new treatments for VL and therapeutic and preventive vaccines for leishmaniasis. His published work has led to changes in the guidelines for the treatment of leishmaniasis. Furthermore, he played a part in setting the priorities of Health Research in Sudan, Federal Ministry of Health, Sudan. Professor Musa is committed to controlling common neglected tropical diseases.

During his time in Oxford, Professor Ahmed will be working on a project that involves synthesizing the best evidence from pooled data on Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) and Post-Kala-Azar Dermal Leishmaniasis (PKDL), with the aim of optimizing disease management and clinical/research data collection.
